Man and woman taking proposal photography photos in Detroit

Z Garage Detroit Proposal Photography with Arjun and Kirtana

On a brisk February evening, I had the honor to photograph a Detroit proposal between Arjun and Kirtana. Arjun had reached out to me at the end of January. He knew he wanted to propose to his girlfriend in Detroit and wanted some help figuring out exactly where and was looking for a Michigan engagement photographer to capture the moment. Here is a little inside scoop into what Detroit proposal photography may look like if you’re currently planning a proposal!

I was excited to be part of this! I love photographing proposals. They are definitely the most nerve wracking to shoot, but they are always so much fun. I spent some time on the phone with Arjun to discuss where to propose in Detroit and what times would work best, as well as brainstorm some plans for what to do after the event.

I always recommend planning a whole day around the engagement: make reservations for drinks or food, plan time with family or go somewhere special that means a lot to both of you.

Planning a proposal in Detroit

Planning a proposal can be intimidating no matter where you want to pop the question! (That’s why I created a guide people proposing called How to Plan a Proposal.) Planning a proposal in Detroit can pose it’s own challenges. You want to make sure you choose the perfect spot at the perfect time so there are not too many people around, and of course no big events!

After our phone call at the end of January, we came up with a plan for the proposal:

  • Propose on top of the Z Garage in Detroit
  • Take photos on top of the garage, at The Belt and around downtown
  • A&K would go out and celebrate at local speakeasy I recommended to them

My husband (then fiance) Alec was kind enough to come with me and help out with the proposal. We set out a blanket with LED candles (didn’t want to worry about anything catching on fire) at the top of the Z garage. The lighting was perfect and nobody else was around so A&K could have their intimate moment together.

A&K had walked out of the elevator on the top floor and to the blanket. He got down on one knee, and of course she said yes!

Engagement Photos in Detroit

After the proposal, we took a few photos on top of the parking garage and at The Belt, which is the alley beside the garage. I love shooting there because you get to see a little of the Detroit skyline and have some fun art and colors in your photos.

The couple really enjoys getting coffee together, so we even snapped some pics at the nearby MadCap coffee and Parker’s Ally. We just had fun, and I always try to capture as many candid moments as possible with my couples.

We spent almost an hour and a half together, walking around Detroit and capturing a ton of photos. One of the reasons I enjoy photographing engagements in downtown Detroit is because of the variety of locations available to us.
