On a very cold winter day, I met with the Glinski family to document a few maternity photos before their baby’s arrival! We met at Dodge #4 State Park, one of my favorite locations for maternity photos in Waterford.
Dodge #4 is one of the best spots for winter shoots because there are so many pine trees! The pop of green against the snow adds color and life to your maternity photos. We had a very cold day (I believe it was below zero!) but we took some breaks in our cars to make sure we could get all the photos we wanted!

What to Wear for Winter Maternity Photos
The short answer: stay warm! Winter maternity photos are so pretty, but it’s important for you to stay warm and comfortable! Layer up with fleece leggings and wool socks. Also consider a warm outfit like a knit dress or simple jeans and a flannel!
At the end of the day, you want your photos to also represent your style. I always recommend wearing clothing that really shows off your bump for maternity photos. I have a curated list on Amazon with some maternity outfit ideas here!

What to Include in Maternity Photos
I encourage all couples to bring along a few items for their maternity photos to help tell the story of their 9 months carrying the baby. Plus, these add some variety and interest to your photos. Here are some items to include in maternity photos:
- Sonograms: both long and short sonograms work! These can be really fun to add to photos.
- Booties: especially a fun pair! The Glinski family found a matching pair of boots to include in their shoot.
- Onesie: a onesie can be fun to include in a maternity shoot, especially if it has some kind of sentimental value. Maybe it holds a special message or is from your favorite sport team.
- Signs or letterboards: these can be used to share a message or baby’s name.
- Flowers: flowers like baby’s breath can be fun to incorporate into a session as a representation of growth and blooming!
It can also be fun when you end up including some of these props into your newborn photos, like booties or onesies.

When to Book Maternity Photos
Start looking for maternity photographers in your second trimester. This will give you time to contact a variety of photographers and get to know them! Some photographers, like Savvy Shoots, offer maternity and newborn bundles so you can book both sessions and save some money! You can learn more about our maternity and newborn photography offerings on our website here.
