Where to Take Senior Pictures in Rochester Hills

Rochester Hills is full of scenic spots that make for beautiful backdrops in senior photography. Some of my favorite photo locations include:

  • Innovation Hills – This park is a great place for summer and fall photos. In the fall, they have some of the best color change in the Metro Detroit area!
  • The Village of Rochester Hills – For a more urban or modern aesthetic, this outdoor shopping district has colorful walls, chic architecture, and great lighting.
  • Yates Cider Mill – A local favorite, especially in the fall. The historic mill, flowing river, and vibrant foliage provide a rustic, timeless feel.
  • Rochester Municipal Park – This versatile park offers open fields, forested paths, and a charming little pond—ideal for both casual and elegant looks.
  • Rochester Museum at Van Hoosen – Van Hoosen allows photography on their grounds for a fee, usually under $100. You’ll be able to utilize outdoor areas near the barns, creek and gazebo.
  • Stony Creek Metro Park – This is a great location to get a mix of woods and water in your portraits. This is an exceptionally busy area for photographers during the summer. Be sure to consult with your photographer for ideal times and locations at this park!
  • Bear Creek Nature Park – This is a small park located in Rochester. It’s quiet and has lush greenery in the summer. There’s also a bridge with some water to change up the scenery!

Choosing a location that feels like you is key. Whether you’re into nature, city vibes, or something in between, there’s a perfect spot in Rochester Hills.

What to Wear for Your Senior Photo Session

Outfits can make a big impact in senior photos. Choose clothing that represents who you are as a person. You may also want to include special items like T-shirts form a play or a varsity jacket.

Here are a few style tips:

  • Wear something that reflects your personality. Love fashion? Go glam. Into sports? Rep your jersey. The goal is to feel confident and authentic.
  • Choose 1–3 outfits. A mix of casual, semi-formal, and trendy looks gives variety to your final gallery. A one hour session is typically enough time for 1-2 outfits, while a two hour session allows more outfit changes and variety.
  • Solid colors > busy patterns. Solid tones photograph best and keep the focus on you.
  • Accessorize smartly. A jacket, hat, or statement necklace can elevate a look, but avoid anything too distracting. You may also want to include an instrument, ball or other items that help tell your high school story!
  • Coordinate with your location. For example, earthy tones blend beautifully with outdoor settings like Bear Creek or Stoney Creek, while bold colors pop against the architecture in downtown Rochester.

How to Prepare for Senior Pictures

Prepping for your senior session ensures everything goes smoothly—and that your personality shines through every image.

  • Get plenty of rest the night before. It shows!
  • Hydrate and take care of your skin. A simple skincare routine the week leading up can make a big difference.
  • Bring a small bag with essentials. Think: lip balm, brush/comb, water, oil blotting sheets, and outfit accessories. Feel free to bring extra clothing items as well if you want more options during the shoot.
  • Practice your smile and poses in the mirror. It might sound silly, but a little practice helps you feel more comfortable in front of the camera.
  • Relax and have fun! This is your moment to celebrate who you are and all you’ve achieved.
